I always ask the owner’s permission if I can pet their dog. I word it as, “Is your dog friendly?”

One of my favorite memories is of the time a friend and I were visiting a couple that he knew. They had a dog that they said “never lets strangers pet him”. As I was sitting there, I watched the dog. He appeared to want to come closer, but would shy away if any movement was made toward him. I let my left arm just rest outstretched off the couch and watched the dog very slowly inch closer and closer to it. He got close and sniffed my hand then actually let me touch him with a couple of fingers. After a couple of scoots away, he stayed and let me scratch and stroke his muzzle and head. Soon, he was up on the couch and all over me! The owners were absolutely flabbergasted! Priceless!

Dogs become submissive when they detect someone that is naturally dominant.

I pulled into a farm and the two farm dogs came running at me. I said my friendliest hello, let them sniff me, and I scratched and rubbed both of them. I rang the doorbell to buy some of the eggs listed on the sign, and the farmer looked for his dogs and had a shocked look on his face when he saw his two dogs sitting beside me and wagging with a “we found a new friend” look on their face. He usually had to take the money and deliver the eggs to the visitors car window.
