The pagana tradition in Latvia WAS “gypsies” running around the neighbourhood dressed up, singing and acting and getting stuff… sure, singing requires a little bit more effort than just shouting “trick or treat”, but still.

As Niels Bohr (Danish physicist) would put it: Your theory is crazy, Oona, but crazy enough to work.

Christmas Caroling (aka Wassailing) started like trick or treating, with an ale punch (wassail) or figgy pudding (see “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”) as typical treats. In the same line is the Cajun tradition “Coureurs de Mardi Gras” in which young men on horseback would go from farm to farm collecting gumbo ingredients, then everybody would get together for gumbo and dancing.

“Christmas season” starts at Halloween now, anyway…this isn’t as odd at it might seem.

Now if they can also combine Thanksgiving with it, maybe they can get some turkey to go along with the candy and the popcorn balls.
