Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for December 20, 2013
December 19, 2013
December 21, 2013
Transcript:
Penguin 1: What are you doing, Fred? Penguin 2: Playing polka. They say that music soothes the savage beast. Penguin 1: It's just so hard to like polka.
For this we take a break from Calvin and Hobbes? Without Steph’s view of Susie’s fate? This has to be the strip for ADHD enjoyment … oh, look, Polar Bear having musical Oreos!
For polka you have to be good to have an effect. Should have stuck with something easy, something foolproof, something anybody can play. Like bluegrass.
@ Defunctdoormat from yesterday. I’m familiar with Pants Are Overrated, but another guy took up the challenge of producing more – in response to the many readers who wanted more Hobbes & Bacon. I can’t remember his name, but there are now several more than 4 strips.
Was hoping to find out what Susie Derkins is doing 25 years later and instead we get flightless birds … does that mean Pastis will plaster Bloom County next week instead?
Stupid, I know, but as an English major, this mis-quote never fails to infuriate me. It’s not “Soothes the Savage Beast”, it’s “Soothes the Savage Breast”. Grrrrr. Sort of like Play it Again Sam, which was never said in the movie. Although in this context I guess beast is appropriate. How did the Oreo penguins get out of lock-up in USA? Too little information here. Different oreos I guess but it’s sad. I don’t like sad cartoons. Like the little duckling rejected by his Mum. Not funny. Sad. Better quit with the sad stuff Mister or I will stop viewing this cartoon, all the way from Australia. Cartoons by definition are supposed to cheer you up.
To be fair, it’s not like Pastis attributed the “savage beast” quote to Congreve. The penguin is simply paraphrasing, or perhaps satirizing the original quote.

The bright spot here was that the accordion sank.

That savage beast has been soothed. For the moment.
jnik23260 almost 11 years ago
His problem was he misunderstood the quote: It’s “breast”.
bluegirl285 almost 11 years ago
I’m pretty sure whoever coined that phrase didn’t even mean polka.

Are we having a barrel of fun yet?

It seems to me that the polar bear DID like the polka.
It attracted him to the spot, and he ate it.
If your cat’s food did that, you’d say he liked it.
doublepaw almost 11 years ago
The phrase mentions music-not polka which is something entirely different.
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
Such a biased (not to mention murderous) oreo! Not all polka is unbearable: try this polka, guys!

@masterskrain -It was either that… or a banjo.

Or you could have a look at what Fins can do with polka : “Ievan Polkka” (’Eva’s Polka’) by Loituma : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4om1rQKPijI

Shoulda tried klezmer.

This has nothing to do with whether the bear liked polka or not. It was the middle Oreo who hated it and kicked his friend into the bear’s mouth.
