Could be worse: airline “food”. THERE’s an oxymoron that’sright up there with “congressional ethics.”

Our local hospital has an interesting system. They have a rather large menu that’s on par with most family style restaurants. Unless you are on a restricted diet, you can order whatever you want.

You decide when you want to eat. Call down, and it’s delivered within 30 minutes – sometimes as fast as 15 minutes. The food isn’t that bad. The hospital pays more per menu item when compared with the “everybody gets the same meal cooked in bulk” system they used to be on, but there is less waste, and food expense actually went down since people ordered only what they wanted.

The food is provided by the same cafeteria that serves the staff. By having the patients as customers as well, they do a big enough volume business to make a profit without having to charge a lot of money.
