What Vitamin is referring to is called a Kinescope. Kinescopes were films made from a standard over the air live broadcast for the Eastern states. The Kinescopes would then be transmitted later in the day for the Western states.
Too bad Flintheart doesn’t have a private screening room like Kadaver has. I guess that crime pays better than acting — at least for now. Kadaver will be brought to justice yet.
Kinescopes being of “poor quality” is a myth. Sure they are not the same quality as something being shot on film, but a properly made kinescope is far from poor.
DuMont sometimes used a system called Electronicam in which a program was broadcast and recorded on film at the same time. They used this to record the “Classic 39” Honeymooners episodes. Apparently, there are only about 350 complete episodes of anything done by DuMont out of 20,000 episodes produced over a timespan of about a decade. Supposedly, most of the kinescope and Electronicam films were either recycled to recover silver or dumped by the truckload into the East River in New York in the mid-1970s to make more room in the warehouse.
Copies of only about 24 of the 1500 Captain Video episodes are known to exist today.
Today’s strip, especially panel 2, is a marvelous exercise in portraiture and perspective—almost like an artist’s personal sketch pad, fleshed out for publication. Very expressive, and helping to solidify Vitamin’s key rôle in at least this part of the arc….
Apparently, Vitamin thinks this is a legitimate offer from a real film buff. So, why the trip to Police HQ? I guess this is just a social call, with Vitamin’s big ego making him think this is a bigger deal than it really is.
OK… Vitamin may be a vain, snobbish old thespian, but he’s not mean-spirited enough to keep a rare bit of TV history (not to mention a great piece of publicity for himself) from the public… unless it contains something he desperately desires to keep hidden. What might that be? What could the camera have captured that could in some way ruin Vitamin…?
Gweedo, he knows darn well who Liam is. He probably still has lash marks. That’s when he took a sabbatical for a while. Then, he paid up his back bridge rent and came back-a-postin’! Someone under the next bridge span must have explained to him what LOL means, and he uses it to this day. Fact is, that he uses it so much that he entertains himself.
That’s very interesting about Desi, I have more respect for him knowing his innovativeness.

Have it transferred to BluRay or DVD and offer it for sale. You will make a fortune.

Great Flinheart is a hoarder! Fiction mirroring real life. – collectors with films and tv shows sitting on them and not letting them out.

So Flintheart goes to Nitrate’s to get the film and falls into a trap, or Nitrate uses the film as a bribe to get Flintheart to perform some service…

Jackie Gleason (The Honeymooners) saw the future profits in “re-runs”. He had the rights to all of his shows… and along came YouTube.

… so no one else can see it, and his reputation as a thespian be ruined. (Just ask Jerry Lewis about “The Day the Clown Cried”… or better yet, don’t.)

Yeah, it’s just like Diet Smith and his destruction of moon technology. He (Smith) should be reviled.

Great art today, especially Vitamin’s pose in the second panel.I wonder where all this is heading, and I’m enjoying the ride there.
