Mrs. Olsen: This worksheet's not due until tomorrow. Caulfield: Okay. I'll just turn in my Thursday assignment on Friday. Mrs. Olsen: That's not how it works, Caulfield. Caulfield: Oh, I'm pretty sure it is. Frazz: How's your unit on averages going? Caulfield: Surprisingly useful.

Caufield, the “averages” thing works only if the bonus points you get for turning this homework in early are the same as the points you lose for turning the next one late. But that is almost certainly not going to happen. But then you will have learned a little more about averages.

No teacher is going to complain about receiving an assignment early.

She’s still going to mark yesterday’s assignment as late. Until then, dream on Caulfield, dream on.

If she offered bonus points for turning work in early, and automatic grade drops for turning them in late, I’ll bet Caulfield would actually start getting his work in on time.
