Actually it was the capture of American General Charles Lee in a tavern by the British – without it ashington would not have had the troops to win the Battle of Trenton.
While I agree that history is not all about dates, dates ARE important, as they often explain events that come after. For example, is it important to know that the Boston Tea Party came before the Revolutionary War or is it okay to believe that it came afterwards? Is it important to realize that the French and Indian War (The Seven Years War) and it’s resulting taxes and burdens on the Colonists were a direct cause of tensions between England and the Colonies, or did the Revolution just “happen”?
Thank you for inserting a tasty bit of, well, TASTE into our discussion. Well done! And with that wonderful menu for tea I really think you should be “An Uncommon ’tater.” ;-)
Without dates history is just timey-wimey, wibbly-wobbly stuff.Without an UNDERSTANDING of history we are doomed to repeat ad infinitum. (Standing on the shoulders of giants here.) With dates AND understanding, we are still doomed to repeat because we do not achieve a wise heart. (Even bigger shoulders here.)
Earl Grey tea is vile… Darjeeling is better for afternoon tea.
I’m not sure that Americans have been able to make proper tea since 1773; I suppose the usual offering of a Lipton’s Yellow Label teabag in of a cup of more-or-less hot but nowhere near boiling water is a little better than chucking the tea into cold brine but really not a proper cuppa ;-)
Exactly! I laughed at Calvin like everyone else but there are good reasons to know dates, especially the year when something of importance happened.:-)

Memorizing dates is the WRONG way to learn history. The WHYS and AFFECTS are more important.

Time is the measure of motion according to the before and after. (Aristotle) It is a mental abstraction with a basis in reality.
