Mary Lou: Pop, what if you retired, and Gene and I took over "The Dock"? Gus: No, Mary Lou... Gus: This place pays its way, but the profit margin is razor-thin! Gus: It's been even worse since we decided to compete for the high-end diners! Mary Lou: And that was my bright idea, is that what you're saying? Gus: I didn't say 'bright'!

Interesting how this is going. A friend of mine’s parents own a decent sized “rustic” marina on a river. It’s got docks, fuel, houseboat rentals, and a convenience store. I THINK it’s on the 3rd generation now. My friend’s Dad won’t let either him or his brother have anything to do with the business. He says that three generations of being “trapped” there fighting to make a go of it is enough. This sentiment seems pretty common in the service industry after a while.

Its ocean front real estate, its worth a couple million at least. Sell to a fat cat who will replace the restaurant with a fancy private mansion.

Truly. The restaurant business is the most difficult business, as anyone who has been on the inside of a variety of business knows. To biglar155’s comment, that sentiment is not confined to service industries.

Good luck with the organic farming alternative. I tried that for 10 years. Not much to be made there either, and the hours are interminable during the spring, summer, and fall. And there is no income during the winter.

The way to make a small fortune in the restaurant business is to start with a large fortune.
