It’s as long story. But i once sent our local Bell company (Southwestern Bell) $10 to pay for the avocado, hard-wired, 1960’s vintage, rotary dial phone that was installed in our house. They sent the money back.
I had a friend I would dial up and ask, “This is a collect obscene phone call. Will you accept the charges?” She usually replied, “Wait a sec. I have to grab my cigarettes.”
I don’t know if they’re still there, but in New York there are pay phones placed in different neighborhoods and certain sections of the city. You go in and pick up the phone and you can hear recordings of people who lived in those places in the 80s and hear their first-hand accounts of events that happened in those areas.

I saw one once. I used it to change into my skating outfit.

My kids stopped calling collect when they started using pre-paid phone cards, which was actually cheaper than person-to-person collect calls.
