Ripley's Believe It or Not! POOKIE!! New research suggests that cats, like dogs, recognize their owners' voices - but they usually choose to ignore them. Ancient Romans could buy vials of sweat and dirt scraped from the skin of famous gladiators - some used it as face cream. British World War II gunner Nicholas Alkemade survived with just minor injuries after jumping 18,000 feet from his flaming bomber plane without a parachute and landing in deep snow.

That must have been over Russia or somewhere. It would have to be heavy snow and I believe over 10 feet deep to stop a 150 pound man traveling at 120 MPH.

But we’ve always known cats ignore us. Cats were worshiped as gods in ancient Egypt — and they will never allow us to forget this fact.

They probably spent millions of dollars on that research when all they had to do was ask a cat owner. Heck, I would’ve told them for a mere 500 thousand.

Nobody owns a cat. They just allow us to feed and pamper them. We’re their pets…

You had better not mean what it sounds like it means, or you’ve acquired an enemy for life.

The cat I had years ago knew the sound of my car and would come running from where ever she was to the front door. Only time she liked being inside was meal time.

One of my cats runs to greet me every day; another gets in my lap and touches my hand with her paw for me to pet her.

We should see if there’s a market for modern soldier sweat.

Night-Gaunt49As kali39 said “But we’ve always known cats ignore us. Cats were worshiped as gods in ancient Egypt — and they will never allow us to forget this fact.”So you were probably an Egyptian Pharaoh in a previous life.

I agree with BowtieDaddy. A next-door neighbor used to have what I think was a male calico cat, and that cat wanted to be in my vicinity when I went to visit. He didn’t seek attention, just nearness, and got it. I liked his personality; my brother’s cat did not want to be around us.

Not all gladiators were slaves either. A lot of them were ex-slaves, what the Romans called, ‘freedmen’. When not competing in the ring they would rent themselves out as bodyguards or sometimes hired thugs.
During Rome’s Republican era, politicians would hire them to ensure that the electorate voted for the ‘right’ candidates

The choice of burning up in the plane or jumping? Ya I’d jump.

Here’s a simple fact: dogs are pack animals and must have a pack to relate to – many problems with dogs occur when the dog mistakenly gets the idea that it is the alpha.
Cats are not pack animals.
So in general, dogs come when called and cats do not. However, as many cat owners have shown, not all cats live b y that rule. I have known more than one dog that was indifferent to commands. My friends Great Pyrenees dog is a good example of this. The Great Pyrenees is a very old breed that has been used for hundreds of years by shepherds and was bred to be independent.
