About Puddles: I think the girls are still in Bernice’s room, so Puddles must still be at home? ;)

“The future is just the past disguised as the present.”-Smiled at that one. Perhaps Greg realized that every comic strip needs a wise old character to spew out philosophical nonsense. Never quite pegged Bernice to fit that type of role, but she wears it well.
William Loster over 10 years ago
Is this Bernice’s room? It looks different from Luann’s…if so why is Bernice sitting on the floor and Luann still reigning over the bed?
William Loster over 10 years ago
I think the third panel sums up Bernice and Luann’s relationship pretty well.

Probably Plato & Socrates debated the same point. One postulates, and the other says you haven’t proved anything. We ought to get the other characters in on this one. Toni might say, if you aren’t done with the past, you’ll have no future.". Tiffany might say, “The past is so yesterday.”. Crystal might say, “Look far into the future until you know what the past was telling you.”. Rosa might say, “Plan C, Geronimo!!”

I guess the best way to put it, would be that using the K.T. version (“To Morrow") instead of the ‘sentimental’ type “Tomorrow” song Mr. Rogers did, would be like having the “Saturday Night Live” ‘newscast’ actually be the real evening news… a change of pace, and a comedic twist, to boot…

So I guess we have a long wait to find out what Rosa’s ‘Plan C’ is. Too bad. I would prefer to find that out sooner, and see less of the dissolving friendship between Luann and Bernice. -In fact, I’d be happy if this strip jumped past the prom to graduation and sent everyone off to their various futures as soon as possible. I’m hoping to see Luann meet some new friends, see what Rosa decides to do, and see what happens with Toni and Brad’s wedding.-I no longer care about whatever is going to happen at ‘Mooney U’…

Personally I’d rather listen to Luann then hear anymore of Queen Be’s attitude of better, smarter and snottier than everyone else.

When the “collegiate era” of this strip begins, I wonder how much time will be allotted to Luann’s life at Community College, as opposed to the scene at Moon(e)y U, where Bernice, Quill, Tiffany and Gunther will be having educational adventures.

How can I get this comic delivered to my email address?
melmarsh9v over 10 years ago
Today’s past was once yesterday’s future. That is probably what Bernice meant, only the way she phrased it sounds like a zen koan. Yes, I do agree with the readers who think Bernice enjoys feeling intellectually superior to Luann, but that’s just the way she is.
Argy.Bargy2 over 10 years ago
Inspired somewhat by today’s discussion of Jabberwocky and the continuing arc at the ‘Pooch Cafe’ strip, I’m wondering if Mr. Evans isn’t beginning a ‘past, present, future’ fantasy dream sequence. It might run this way:-Luann, disheartened by the fact that a person she thinks of as a friend is brushing off her concerns about the future, goes home to bed and first dreams about the Ghost of Bernice of the Past. That ghost shows Bernice about to drown, and Luann saving her, until a separate Bernice shows up to scold Luann for being overly dramatic and interferring in something she isn’t trained to handle. Despite the second Bernice, Luann does rescue the first one.-The next part of the dream shows the Ghost of Bernice of the Present. That ghost sarcastically scolds Luann for wasting everyone’s time with drama, until that ghost heads off for a job interview, forgets to put enough gas in her car and locks herself out. When that ghost returns from her interview, she tells Luann what happened and Luann does not laugh at her.-The last part of the dream, the Ghost of Bernice of the Future, shows Bernice surrounded by books in the library at Mooney U while other students are also having a social life, but Bernice is sending a text to Luann to scold her for not working hard. Luann, however, is not reading that text. She’s busy working with Toni to plan Toni’s wedding, while thanking Toni for letting her bring that nice librarian at Community College, Sam Iam, who hired Luann to run the children’s drama club.

And speaking of Bernice— I wonder what sorts of people she will meet at Mooney. As I remember from my university years, there are college students who are genuinely intelligent, and then there are those who are just faking it.

Re: Jabberwocky…my hub loves to recite long sections of that from memory…I’m just the opposite, my eyes glaze over when I have to memorize long sections of Any sort of writing. For example, in my high-school we had to memorize a speech from Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”’ you know, the one that begins with “Friends, Romans, and countrymen, and etc.” This line is the only one I can remember. Ah, but then, it’s been a long time since then LOL ;)

There are times when people grow in very different directions. This happens with children, teens, family members and married couples. When the direction of one person seems to provide nothing but annoyance to the other person, perhaps the best choice is for those people to go their separate ways. That appears to be the case here.

Well, if you bring that one up, I guess we’d have to add “Rock’n Me”…. – This is why I personally would rate “Eagle” highest on the list:
Steve of course has a lot of catchy songs, but I like the fact that “Eagle” has a sound that’s distinctive from “Jet” and “Rock’n”. The two of them are the more up-tempo, and they’d sound like something I’d down some brew with while watching the game or even at it, or coming home on a Friday, would help me endure the “rush hour blues”. So I love those songs, too. But “Eagle” is the track I’d play once I get in the front door, for the “down time” which to me sets it apart….

-Luann and Bernice would have a difficult time without each other-It may seem that way to those who have been reading this comic from its early days. But for those who have come only recently, it’s a puzzle to look at this relationship and try to understand what keeps the two together, other than habit. -People do grow apart as their interests go in different directions. But they may still be able to spend time together if they can enjoy each other’s company. Bernice rarely seems able to enjoy anything that Luann says or does, and that is more than bickering.-Leaving for college is often the point where grade and high school friends part ways. That makes a lot of sense here, and possibly Mr. Evans is foreshadowing that by showing the lack of communication.
