UncaJim: Yes, the “guy lumbago style” (excessive vibrato) term has faded in the music community now. When Welk first appeared on the scene, many musicians were impressed – a dance band using a bassoon or alto flute – what a breakthrough in orchestration! However that soon vanished as it became apparent that was just a gimmick within the relentless sameness of the arrangements.
The shows on TV now are from the past. They’ve been packaged for PBS. Back in the 1950s they were sponsored by Dodge. I recall seeing the brand new 1957s for the first time on his show. I also remember Larry Hooper singing bass when they were signing off for the evening. He always sang, “Dodge had a good time too!” in a descending voice. My dad’s collection of VHS tapes usually have a Welk show on near the end. Whilst I’m re-recording my tapes on to DVDs I believe I’ll pass on the Welk shows.

My favorite clip is when they sang “One Toke Over the Line” on the show (search youtube for welk toke). Evidently he thought it was a gospel song.
