Mrs. Olsen: Any questions? Caulfield: Wouldn't the purring make cats really bad at poker? Mrs. Olsen: Cats don't play poker. Dogs play poker. Caulfield: She must have seen the painting. Frazz: I suspect she owns the painting.
Skulker…. It’s a series of paintings from the turn of the previous century, commissioned by a cigar company to be used in advertising.I believe the artist’s name was Coolidge.
It used to seem that a print of one or the other hung in every den, recreation room, game room, or actual bar, or pool hall, in the US, anyway.
They’ve been reproduced, pirated, copied and parodied, mocked, scorned, and seriously collected.
I love those paintings! I have them (copies) in my basement.
Cassius Marcellus Coolidge is the artist of the originals. Like others have commented, these have been copied, imitated and parodied by many. One of my favorites who have been inspired was Donald Roller Wilson – who took monkeys to a whole new level!
Several years ago my daughter commissioned a very talented artist to re-create the infamous Dogs-Playing-Poker painting, only using our dogs as the subject. She provided pictures of the dogs she had growing up, the dog her husband had growing up, the two she has now, the one I have now, etc. It came out VERY nice. She has the original painting in their man cave. I have a print in mine. . .

dogs aren’t good poker players either they wag their tails when they get a good hand

Dogs grin and wag their tails, cats stick their tails straight up (a cat’s tail “wag” means indecision).

Even if cats did play poker they could fake their purring.

In Europe, I once bought a sculpture of dogs playing poker. It was great, since it had so many cool little details.
