If Abraham had Tweeted... -An Alternative History- The Gettysburg Address On the South's Firing Upon Fort Sumter The Emancipation Proclamation Ford's Theatre Goat: Please don't write Abraham Lincoln tweets. Rat: It's like I'm channeling the guy. Pig: Did he enjoy the play?

Lincoln would never have posted anything on the Net — he was too honest.
Kali39 almost 11 years ago
Hmm…this could work.@McClellan: If not using army, pls let me borrow...(actual quote, in tweet speak – and no one complain: the problem with Twitter is that there are too many twits…)
KZ71 almost 11 years ago
Yeah, how did that play end, anyway?
R2-Wolf almost 11 years ago
I want to see the vampire hunter tweets!
R2-Wolf almost 11 years ago
That was real, wasn’t it? I mean, they don’t make movies about real people that aren’t factual. Da Vinci’s Demons for example; complete historic accuracy.

What’s “DI’INT”?
scpandich almost 11 years ago
You can find the script of the play online.
From what I’ve heard, Lincoln was actually enjoying it.

Next week: Calvin Coolidge.

First time I’ve ever heard anyone in pop culture acknowledge that the Emancipation Proclamation did not free slaves in the north. Pastis ees smart.

Almost sounds like croc-ese.

Excellent commentary upon both the state of education today and the displacement of decent commentary with lines from TV shows. Who could write the Gettysburg Address today? Who would listen?

In 1860, at the same time Lincoln was delivering his famous Cooper Union speech, actress Laura Keane was starring in “Our American Cousin” a few blocks west on Broadway!

Brilliant.

Um, do you all remember how some people were saying BC doesn’t do the religious strips anymore? Over on the BC page in an ad for a book full of only those!
Caltex almost 11 years ago
Just wondering who’s going to tweet in the next strip? Would it be better if rat build a time travelling machine, go back in time and “fix” the history?

Bad news Pig….

“Oh, no, you di’int!” means, “please tell me that you did not really say/do that”
singlefemalelaywer almost 11 years ago
The play wasn’t enjoyed by those sitting in the floor seats, but it KILLED in the balcony……….

I saw a “review” made by Mr. Lincoln on the Ford’s Theater: Got shot here. Wouldn’t recommend coming here.

I can see a new video game—tweet that speech in 25 chars or less

Actually Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was a tweet by 19th century standards. Compare it to Edward Everett’s two hour “Oration” that preceded it!
knight1192a almost 11 years ago
Thank god tweeting is something that’s only been around for a few short years. One of the worst ideas in history. Their furthering the reduced attention span of too many people. Seen too many people complain about having to read anything that’s over the length of a tweet as a waste of time. Their not, unlike tweeting.

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is about the shortest presidential speech I know about. Not more than 5 minutes of reading.

I’ve often wondered what the Emancipation Proclamation actually accomplished. It was supposed to free the slaves in the Confederate states, which had declared independence from northern rule. They didn’t consider themselves subject to any laws Lincoln passed.

What’s funny: Abraham Lincoln (or his proxy) actually does tweet. https://twitter.com/Mr_Lincoln

I like the last tweet.
hippogriff almost 11 years ago
partyalldatyme: It was notable (outside the accompanying event) as the first “mirror” to the US audience by a foreign (British) playwright. As for Lincoln’s reply to the last question, “The first part was pert good, but I don’t recall the rest.”
glowing-steak32 almost 8 years ago
It was a real shot in the dark. (and head)

I wonder how many people asked for their money back because they didn’t get to see the entire play?
