My experience is that the ones who say they can keep going till midnight are usually the ones who collapse two hours later.

That got their attention.

I think the question is: WHAT are the dittoes seeing and reacting to?

Remember, the dittos appear to have some kind of telepathic ability. I’m guessing they don’t necessarily have to see something to know it’s there. ;-)

We, the readers can make a good guess at what they’re saying. Now can our heroes figure it out.

Since the dittos apparently can’t talk, they must communicate somehow. However this line did run through my head,“What is it Lassie? Is Timmy caught in the well?”

This ditto seems to be doing it’s job. it was told to protect them, no one said how.

Pity the dittos can’t (won’t?) just create a scrolling text line spelling out what their message. Would save a lot of time & guess work.
