Shut the entire lunch program down, let the parents pack lunch for their own children. It has never worked, and the waste of food every day is unbelievable.

Go get ’em, Michelle, they are putting your kids second to their profits.

I forgot how that Reagan debate ended. Is Ketchup (catsup) a vegetable or not?

From what I’ve seen, a large part of the issue is that the government imposed radical changes in the nutritional requirements without also providing for the students to be educated as to why the changes needed to be made and why the newer foods were better for them. []As a result, kids are now faced with foods that they often cannot even identify, let alone know what to do with. []A far better solution, IMHO, would be to do what the city of Austin, Texas, did when it decided to overhaul its school lunch program. The school district brought in an outside chef to determine ways in which kid-favorite menu items could be made healthier. For example, the chef came up with the idea of using ground, spiced turkey meat and whole-wheat buns for the hamburgers; the turkey meat would be leaner than the usual beef, while the whole-wheat buns were more nutritious. The chef also advised flavored milk (which most school districts are treating like poison) because some kids won’t drink milk otherwise.
