We have to acknowledge that our ancestors got it wrong sometimes. Like the preacher that helped overthrow Georgia’s law against slavery! http://www.patheos.com/blogs/slacktivist/2014/06/17/this-is-not-good-news-this-is-not-salvation/

‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal’.

(Except those we don’t even consider to be men, oh and of course not women.)

Our ancestors got it wrong? True, but I can think of at least one instance in which we’re perpetuating it in the last line of the pledge of allegiance, “…with liberty and justice for all.”

or that God was put in the Pledge during the Red Scare. the ease with which Americans have been duped into Patriotic BS.

Eisenhower had “under God” placed in the pledge because he knew that we were headed for consumerism, which is amoral. He believed if we clung to altruistic values we would not degenerate into what we’ve now become. Think of those who now call for America’s destruction.

It’s absolutely clear from the bible that slavery, chattel slavery, was perfectly alright with god. The real offenses were things like bacon-cheeseburgers. Wouldn’t you think one of the commandments would have been about slavery? Or child abuse? Or genocide? Or texting while driving?

    But NO!

Seems like I’ve always known slavery was wrong. Seems like I’ve always been curious about my ancestors. After I was grown I got interested in genealogy and was shocked to learn that many of my ancestors were slave owners. Now, the pleasure of knowing about them is a little shaded by knowing what they did.

I have to love people who cherrypick from the Bible to make their points. Without even knowing that it’s shorthand for much more complicated situations. For instance, how many American slaves were set free and given gifts after seven years?

@Christopher SheaWhile Marxism worships no god, the gods of consumerism are money and materials. Pope John Paul II on at least 3 occasions warned of rising materialism in the West. The current pope warned of a culture worshiping the god of money. Regardless of who inserted “under god” into the pledge, the concern was that we would become the “Great Satan” as some who’ve us labelled as such. And I had read on 2 occasions that it was Ike who inserted those words. I don’t know who David Barton is; I guess that’s my fault.

People talked lovingly about how wonderful it would have been to have lived in bygone days. Isaac Asimov always let them know he would not have liked it because his ancestors were serfs, another kind of slave, in Czarist Russia.

‘Yes most of the Founders were still small minded.’Ah, but I don’t think they were; most of them were deists, but not Christian. That’s why Barton has to comb their voluminous writings and excerpt single comments to support his nonsense.

Nice strike below the belt Gary o’l boy. What will be his reply to her glee? "Will that be red or black" I’m guessing black since they had no guns.
