Helping the US contributed to bankrupting the French economy (thanks to Ben Franklin’s amazing work at prying money from them, and Beaumarchais’ creative financing), thereby leading to the French Revolution. Unhappily for them, they didn’t already have an established foundation in place for a democracy.

@Travis BickelYour arrogance is only matched by your ignorance. Countries like Britain, France, and Germany had massive industrial military complexes. Large enough to colonize most of the known world. After all, it was Brittania that ruled the seas.Where did it get them? Two world wars. The French lost one-quarter of their military aged men to death or injury in World War I. There was a term in France — "war widow. These were not women who lost their husbands in the First World War; these were women who never married because of the scarcity of men in their generation. The reason the French lost so quickly in WW II is because of the shortage of military age and the memory of 4 years of trench warfare were still fresh in the French mind.The Germans took pride in their military complex, where did it get them? Two lost wars, lost of most of their territory, and partition for 45 years.
