Bad idea, the tires will also melt and clog the ash grates. The thick soot will also clog the flues and smokestack!

And create a lot of thick, black, stinky smoke, too.

The smoke from burning tires is toxic and will probably kill everyone nearby. Gasoline Alley may become so polluted that it has to be abandoned. Give me some time and I’ll find a downside to this.

daJellyBelly is right, and the shop crew is going to be really upset.

I’m not so sure about the smoke killing everyone (probably would need a LOT more burning tires than will be used to get the engine to a fuel supply). And the tires go in the firebox, not the boiler (the engine crew, being polite, don’t bother to correct him since they get the idea).

Not environmentally sensitive, but they burn hotter and harder than coal.

And what if they’re steel-belted radials? What happens to the steel?

I was always fascinated by the incinerator our trash goes to. It chops up the trash, separates out metals (by density and magnetism) and sells them, burns the rest at >800°C, generates electricity to run the plant and export, collects non-metallic minerals in the smoke stack, separates them chemically, and sells them.

Good day fans. Several good ideas and a few not so good ideas. Both groups interesting though.

Why are a pair of nitwits in the middle of nowhere with a steam engine and no train, no fuel, no railfans? Steam locomotives don’t just travel about the countryside like this. There’s no way they could not have known they were short on fuel before they left wherever it was they came from.
