The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder for May 07, 2022
Transcript:
Huey: A child, pre-adolescent, forced into labor by local authorities. Incredibly long hours, sweltering, dangerous working conditions, a miserable existence with little hope of bettering one's lot in life... ... All for virtually no compensation... You know, Nike was in a lot of trouble with Garry Trudeau because of this kind of thing!! Granddad: Shut up and mow the lawn, boy! And who's Garry Trudeau?!

Thatâs why peasant farmers had lots of children, they needed to grow their labour force.
When did chores stop as a thing for kids?
Oh well, now they have homework.

Hmmm. Doonesbury happens to be in the middle of the Nike arc as we speak.

I donât remember Doonesbury being in trouble for Nike, but I DO remember Doonesbury being in trouble for Jimmy Hoffa and Frank Sinatra, though.

Since when does a nice home in a safe neighborhood, utilities, clothes, food, etc. qualify as âvirtually no compensationâ? Then again, this just shows that Huey, no matter how intelligent he may be, is still just a child.

So now kids have to be âproductiveâ instead of just being âkidsâ. Explains a lot about todayâs youthâs attitudes.

Kids were always productive from as soon as they could walk, as my parents used to remind me.
I had a fair list of chores to do while my parents were working.
It is only lately that kids have not had so many chores to do as they usually have to put in a couple of hours homework.
Ours were still expected to tidy up after themselves and to clean their rooms.
