Even if you stay in the highest end hotels, the staff will be rude to you. Americans are not their favorite people. Been there several times. (And even the pricey rooms are not very big).
Luckily when visited Spain with my grandparents. My grandpa was born there and had family and nephews and the food was spectacular and OMG the prices American were so inexpensive. I loved it there. Plus to go the the outdoor zoo there and unfortunately got bit by a monkey and had to get a shot; I couldn’t believe how careful they were and I didn’t even feel it. They had me sit for a bit afterwards just in case but told them I felt fine. Even with that I loved the zoo and the whole trip….something I will always have memories of as I took a lot of pics.
when we visited Paris we were fortunate to be able to stay with my husband’s cousin and her husband. They had a tiny flat (we slept on sofas and the floor), but it was still a delight — especially when we had apricot croissants for breakfast and fabulous food at every other meal as well.

The trick is never to go back to your tiny hotel room.

I’m really disappointed to see Claire like this. Maybe the concierge was rude, but the tiny hotel room, etc is just part of travel.
