Sure. Burl, that renowned bon gastronomique, knows everything about fine dining. He even writes a column in Food & Wine under a pseudonym. He even knows that you should always wipe your silverware with the napkin before you use it.

They put lemon slices in water because it saves the costumer from asking for it.. Free lemonade I guess, the penny’s should be glad of it.. Burl is a messy eater that’s why he washes his fingers in it. Hard to do when the glass gets 1/2 empty.

Would Burl really know how to act in a real fancy restaurant?I don’t think they would last through the appetizer..

Maybe they could all take pictures of each other after dinner, each with a cheesy smile and four fingers shoved deep in a half-empty water glass…fishing for the lemon slice, water overflowing all over the tablecloth…

Then they’d have a memento of their great sophistication..Suave.

The lemon or lime slice is supposed to add a tiny bit of flavor, a little cachet…make the water seem fancier.

I don’t like it…. and I dislike even more the old-refrigerator flavor of most ice cubes, which I suspect the lemon is supposed to disguise.

I ask for my water with neither… which gets me strange looks.

It only looks like Burl’s wearing leopard print. That’s really the splash back from the tomato sauce he was gobbling. (They’re dining under the stars. How nice for Jerry. He doesn’t have to hold them in so much.).(Not that he ever did.)

They are dining under the stars because the staff put them on the patio so the other diners don’t have to look at them.

Some people like the little lemon flavor added to the water. Lemons have been found to be one of the filthiest things in restaurants and bars. They are usually sliced without washing, and they are just grabbed out of a dish with dirty hands that just cleared tables and handled money. I usually say no thanks, but it is a nice extra with the greasy hand cleaning bonus so the Penny’s would never decline it.

@Susan, that’s a good reason NOT to even drink the water in many restaurants (especially while traveling). I’ll stick to gin on the rocks (or tequila or rum) where I have the alcohol to kill the bugs – never got Montezuma’s revenge that way LOL!

I drink purified water at home (lots of it, as I refill gallons and carry smaller bottles with me in the quantity I expect to use.

I don’t buy pre-bottled water unless I run out somewhere else because all those plastic bottles are wasteful. Our politicos claim that tap water is fine and safe to drink but are always collecting those wasteful little bottles for the homeless.

Dazz… Sure, little plastic bottles are wasteful for people who can get tap water….But homeless people need them cos they’re…. well, homeless.

The tap water there may be excellent…. but if you have no place to live…you have no faucets!
