Paige: I am so sick of this cold weather! I wish spring would hurry up and get here! Jason: Actually, that's not how it works, Paige. The seasons are determined by the Earth's location in its orbit and the relative tilt of its axis with respect to the sun. What you should have said is, "I wish WE would hurry up and get to SPRING." Paige: Maybe if I walk faster that'll help. Jason: The Earth's already going 67,000 miles per hour! What difference will that make? Hey, wait up!

Yes, Paige if you walk faster you will get warmer and put distance between yourself and Jason. Good thinking!

Spring can’t come fast enough for me. However, for the Oil & Gas business in Alberta, I would prefer another 2 months of frigid cold winter as then it’s a better guarantee of employment for me.
Also, Paige … if you want Spring to come faster, then rotate your living location between different hemispheres on the earth, i.e. learn where it’s warm and go there. That is what I like to do when I want a break from the cold.

Mother Earth goes to Nascar races at that speed per hour.

Actually, depending on your frame of reference, Spring does indeed come to us (or we to Spring). I’m not quibbling; that’s basic physics. :)
Centering on the Sun, however, leads to a much simpler construction of the physical laws involved (as Jason’s comment implies) - a construction that explains the causality correctly.
When I sit here at five dark o’ the clock to say such a thing, then you know it’s time for me to leave. So I will. :))

Run Paige, run!

Jason’s diagram of the ellipsis is slightly wrong too. Aphelion (furthest away) is in July and Perihelion is in January. And March/September equinoxes are not the midpoints of the curve.

It’s already spring in Animal Crossing.

Still winter here in Atlanta. As of this posting, it’s 44 degees and by Tuesday, we’re again going have either rain or snow! But I’m not going to gripe about it.

Arizona (where I am) doesn’t have Spring. We just have Summer ten months out of the year, with two months of chilly dampness in January and February. (Hey, it gets down into the 50s at night here in Scottsdale this time of year– that’s freezing, by our standards!)

Me neither, Josh 1360, because it’s supposed to get up to 52 degrees today in Atlanta (where I am also). Not shabby for the last day of February. Soon we’ll have the crazy weather of March to usher us into spring.

Still getting some frosty mornings, but Spring is here in the Northwest. Had some good motorcycle rides already, even bought a new bike the last day of January. Still snow up on the slopes, but it’s pretty icy.

Jason , I do not see a lion nor a lamb in the drawing, It will be the IDES before you know it and everyone can predict their own fall and the weather.

ArtyG–rode mine for a couple hours last Friday. 25 degrees F, but sunny. Repeat after me: cold is all in your mind…
I’ll just be happy if it’s fairly warm the next couple weekends. St. Patrick’s Day parade season’s starting. Kilts and sub-freezing temperatures are a lousy combination…

The middle panel makes me think that one of our commenting “crew” has been collaberating with the cartoonist.

Why does Jason hang onto the archaic system? I used it back in 1971, but by 1981 I used only metric. So, the earth is moving around 104,000 km/hr – or better 104 Mm/hr.
The vernal equinox is not really the beginning of spring. It’s setting in this weekend, as the average temperatures begin to rise noticeably. It’s been two weeks since the rise began. Had the seasonal lag been six and a half weeks, instead of three and a half weeks, the equinox would be the middle of spring.
