Hans Conried had a long and distinguished career in (mostly) comedy. Before his tv/movie roles, he was probably best known as the neighbor in My Friend Irma on the radio. (I think he reprised the role in the movie version.)
Only old folks will get this gag. âMake Room For Daddyâ was a TV show that aired in the 50âs and 60âs. It starred Danny Thomas [father of Marlo Thomas who would star in her own sitcom, âThat Girlâ in the 70âs.]. Though not particularly noteworthy itself, the show spawned a virtual sitcom dynasty. In collaboration with Sheldon Leonard, Danny Thomas went on to create and produce several seminal TV series including âThe Andy Griffith Showâ, âThe Dick Van Dyke Showâ , âGomer Pyle, USMCâ and a surprisingly outstanding drama, âI Spyâ that kick started Bill Cosbyâs TV career. âThe Andy Griffith Showâ got its start as an episode of âThe Danny Thomas Showâ [renamed from âMake Room For Daddyâ] in which Thomasâ character is arrested for running a stop sign while passing through the tiny town of Mayberry. That program generated a ton of fan mail asking for more of Sheriff Andy Taylor so Thomas and Leonard decided to give him his own show which turned out quite well for all parties. Ironically, of all the shows in that dynasty, âMake Room For Daddyâ is the least remembered or celebrated.
And since the subject is Danny Thomas, he will always be best remembered as the real life founder of St. Judeâs Childrenâs Hospital.
Swoose. As in âCharlie the Swooseâ. A childrenâs book from the 1930s. In WWII a B-17 was all beat up and cannibalized for parts. Soon other B-17s were cannibalized for parts and many of them went into one aircraft that was part D, E & F models of the B-17. The aircraft commander, a man by the name of Frank Kurtz, named the plane âThe Swooseâ because it was âpart swan, part goose.â He later named his daughter Swoosie. She is the first known example of a girl being named after an airplane instead of the usual other way around. My plane, a Cessna P337G is named [REDACTED] after the character in Greek mythology and Japanese manga and anime. My screen name is a clue.
