In 6th grade I wrote my first term paper on honeybees. (Inspired by my pediatrician, who had beehives behind his office). The most fun part was drawing hexagons for the beehive illustration.
I never had to be pushed to read something as my mother taught me to love reading, I tried to do the same with our 4 kids, however computers and the advent of the internet enthralled them more than anything else.
Joe you are fortunate your mom wants you to read during summer and not breakfast box.I wished my mom would done that, she felt reading was a waste of time, when I was a kid I did not know about libraries. My dad did not get with book’s until after he retired and she could not stand that. My sister is like mom prefers the man be the one too know not her, she does know how to read just choses not to. When I was able I bought my own books to read when I had a job to work. With my kids we lived in a small town I take them both to the library to check out books to read, they also checked out school library books, yet I take them to the park to play, also we have fun times, and they go to VBS at different churches. For me I do have books to read.

Nice try, Joe. Sneak in three or four comic books. Maybe you can get away with those.

Get a box of cereal from Canada and you can read the French translation.

Maybe Joe can claim it as extra credit…

I don’t see a problem here, read away. You won’t get any credit, but you may learn a new word.

I taught myself to read from the back of cereal boxes—Sugar Frosted Flakes and Cap’n Crunch. I learned about nutrition much later.

I tried that in grade school back in the sixties. Didn’t work then, either.

Never discourage a child from reading. Joe may see something on the cereal box that will lead him to read a real book about the subject.
