I always say I have three kids: an infant, a toddler, and a teenager.

When I was a kid, the rule was ‘When mom says no, go ask dad.’ Dad was clueless in what went on inside the house. But he had an Oreo cookie stash in the barn. :-D

Oh boy, I thought Steve was the baby’s grandfather! My husband and I try to be on the same page parenting-wise, but we aren’t always. It’s my mom that caves in everytime Noah cries or wants something…and it’s frustrating!!! I can’t count how many cars he has which are the same car, but a different color, which my mom bought him because he wanted it. I keep telling her not to, and we argue about it, but my arguments fall on deaf ears…I know she’s a grandma and he’s only young once (the arguments she makes), but it’s not giving him a very good guideline!

And, as for the husband being a child too, when people ask when am I having another baby, I say “when I get these two raised, I’ll think about it!” :)

My parents tried hard to be on the same page. For the most part, if we went to Dad, his first question was always, “What did Mom say?”

Just so you know…..I would never point out to my friend what her husband just did. To me what Elly said was bad manners.

My wife will make a rule (no cookies before meals), I’ll try to enforce the rule (Sorry bud we need to wait until after lunch) and then she will be the one to give in (Well lunch won’t be ready for 30 minutes and he is hungry)

Behavior that is rewarded tends to continue; behavior that is not rewarded tends to go away. Works with people and dogs as well.

Are they raising a kid, or is the kid raising them?

Why not just take Steve aside, and try to get on the same page with him.

I thought Steve was the kid’s grandfather. Is he her husband, boyfriend or what? I’m confused…

My kids know that their father will just say “I don’t know. What does Mommy say?”. On the other hand, sometimes I would get different answers from my mom and dad, so we always tried asking both. And there was endless debate over what “we’ll see” meant…

It never did any good to ask my mother for anything, no matter how big or small, because she was the typical wife and mother of her day – the man was the man, the head of the household. Whatever he said went and she apparently had absolutely no say at all. Her answer was always something like “Did you ask your dad first?”, “What did your dad say?”, or “Whatever your dad says.”, etc. Ugh!!!

I’m just soooooooo glad I didn’t marry a man like my dad!!!!! How awful it would be to have absolutely NO say in your own home and with your own kids … not even as to whether or not they can have a cookie!!!!!!!!!!

I’m afraid the 70’s era was a time of “stereotypical man bashing” but all the guys I know somehow survived it. It also brought an awareness to women which allowed them to make better choices in their mates and for some of us to have a little more power in our lives than our mothers had.

This strip is the 80’s, and now she’s adding updates to it. But even in the 80’s there was no Dr. Phil saying that parents need to be united and consistent with discipline and rules. It just took people with a little common sense to come up with that on their own. I couldn’t get away with anything with either of mine, and if I did get past one, I got punished by both of them for being sneaky.

None of these FBOW couples have good communication skills, especially with their spouses. None of the women ever take direct issue with the offending actions of the spouse, except to complain to each other about it, so they deserve the periods of angst they’re always yelling about, because they refuse to even try, as is evident in today’s strip.

No the men aren’t given much credit at all in this strip, but just look at the attitudes and actions they were drawn to exhibit. It’s hard for any of us to ever stick up for them, because there’s very little substance to them. They seem lazy and irresponsible as drawn, not just by my opinion.

    I still want a cookie.

Happy Passover Susan, and to the rest of the people who celebrate it.
