Nelson Mandela’s favourite poem was INVICTUS by William Ernest Henley Out of the night that covers me… …black as the pit from pole to pole WELCOME ROBBENEILAND WELKOM I thank whatever gods may be… …for my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance… …I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance… …my head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place… Of wrath… And tears… …Looms but the horror of the shade. And yet the menace of the years… …finds and shall find me unafraid. THE SUN MANDELA’S 27-YEAR ORDEAL TO END City Press MANDELA GOES FREE TODAY HERALD NEWS FREE AT LAST! It matters not how straight the gate… …how charged with punishments the scroll. I am the master of my fate… …I am the captain of my soul. Nelson Mandela 1918 - 2013

@Zen PencilsGavin-sama, I wept at the memory of the man who has been my childhood hero, upon whose passing I shaved off my long hair. I had seen your previous Invictus render about schoolyard bullying and silently remembered Dr. Seuss’ timeless classic “I Had Trouble In Getting to Solla Sollew”, a classic tale about overcoming hardships and bullying, seething with rage as the schwachkopfen who frequent this site spouted lies and platitudes below your page.
Today, seeing your rendition of Madiba and his mantra, I can only weep with gratitude and rememberance.

I forget who said it but one commentator remarked on the day of his release that now “Free Mandela” was an adjective and no longer a verb.

To those he was fighting he was a terrorist. Like Israel. Those folks were considered terrorists. Sometimes a terrorist is viewed as such because of who is viewing them.Back in the 60s we demonstrators were viewed as un American, Communists. Those who had to fight in Viet Nam were called Baby Killers, Murderers. Its all in who views.Open your mind when you open your eyes then you can see what is really going on.To the leaders of that South Africa he was a terrorist. To the British occupying Palestine the Jews were terrorists. We now have a free South Africa (it still has problems) and a free Israel (it still has problems)bpullin is not wrong. The one thing Mandela did was to offer his hands to bring ALL South Africa together….that was his legacy. He could have divided it but instead he joined it. It is still a struggle one day to solve it self when WE learn we can all live together as ONE world not just groups living behind invisible lines on a map, ideology, political, or religious views. For now just smile and wave.

People need to remember this and stop blaming others for their condition and situation. Be your own master of your life.

And yet, Mandela’s gone now, and we generally characterize a man’s life by what he accomplished, not how others viewed him. Those who see him as a terrorist demean the heroic nature of his life and the amazing feat he performed uniting such a bitterly divided country. Yes, MLK was a “terrorist” to the police in the South, Jesus was a “terrorist” to the Romans and the Hebrew establishment and wielders of negative epithets for great and ultimately positive men and women are the dust of history. Mandela was a great man, and his very positive legacy will endure and continue to teach tolerance and unity.
I’m smiling and waving.
