All we did was send the new kids on a camping trip off (via the long route) to find the Scoutmaster and complain that our campfire was too smoky so we needed a left-handed smoke-shifter. The big question always was, would the Scoutmaster get exasperated at us all, or play along and drag out the quest?
But fictional wildlife offers endless additional possibilities.

A snipe is a real bird, but the snipe hunt is still a classic practical joke.

Sent some kids on a snipe hunt once and they caught one.
