Rosalyn: "CALVIN!" Calvin: "Hang on, Roz. The phone is ringing" Rosalyn: "I hope it's your parents! I hope they ask to talk to me! Boy, you'll be in trouble THEN!" Calvin: "It's your boyfriend, Charlie! Should I tell him you're indisposed? Ha Ha!" Rosalyn: "NO! LET ME TALK TO HIM!" Calvin: "Say Chas, don't you think you're settling for too little in the girlfriend department?"

Chas, your girlfriend needs help.

To be fair, she did this to herself. Maybe she shouldn’t have asked Calvin for trouble when she walked in.

Taking advice from a 5 year old in regards girlfrieds would probably not be something Chas would do.

You think Rosalyn would have the sense to ask a neighbor for help or something.

In Response to NoSleep:
“Is that a ROTARY LAND-LINE Calvin is on?
How old is this strip?".It appears to be dated 1994. Regardless, the “land-line only” days were so much better. When I was young we still had party lines and you only had to dial four numbers to get through in some locations..Now everyone seems tied to their phones. They are the ultimate in rudeness. People sitting at the same table for lunch and instead of conversing their noses are buried deep in their “stupid” phone texting. Who knows, they may be even texting each other. The art of face to face conversation seems to be fading away..When you actually are in a face to face conversation their phone rings and when they answer it, they are essentially saying, excuse me while I blow you off for this much more important conversation..Then you have the idiots that text and drive. :-P.I would be more than happy to see all mobile phones go away.

I had a rotary phone into the mid 1990s (the time of this strip). I only got rid of it when there were too many places I had to call where you had to “press 1 for this, press 2 for that”.

I just send my wife a look. She knows. After 26 wonderful years it is often we communicate without words.

Besides the rotary phone, Watterson’s other slightly anachronistic item in C&H was the television set with rabbit ears – and no sign of a VCR.

Hmmm. If Calvin was really evil, he would tell Charlie that Rosalyn can’t come to the phone right now because she’s busy making out on the couch with some boy…

what did she expect with Calvin?

Isn’t this when Roz’s babysitting rate for Calvin jumped to $50/hour?

In 40 years I wonder what technology the old textaholics will complain about the kids’ overusing…

Well, when land lines were made ridiculously expensive in comparison we were forced to get a cell phone plan. We went with consumer cellular, got 2 basic Motorola flip phones (WX345) and a plan that costs $60/month total. No texting, no internet, no frills…just 2,500 minutes. Typically we don’t use close to half of that. Right now, after 1/2 month we have used 365 minutes, 4 of those are mine. Our niece (on my wife’s side) just had her first baby so my wife has been on the phone quite a bit for that..Quite often I forget even to take my phone with me…and I don’t miss it. Unlike most people today, I am not a slave to my phone. There are quite a few times when I forget to take it on purpose.
