The last panel is actually from one of the first comics crossovers. It’s an appearance of the Yellow Kid from “Hogan’s Alley” in R.F. Outcalt’s other strip, “Buster Brown.”
As for “Al,” contemplate the reference to “leaping through time.”
LOL!!! Thanks Pab. ( By the way “Al,” is the watch being a time machine a reference to “Voyagers,” a very short-lived time travel show from the early 1980s?)
The pocket watch time machine was done well on The Outer Limits. (Not original series, ’80s or ’90s)
It took Pab’s post, for me to catch the Quantum Leap reference, I was also thinking Paul Simon.

I would have said “The Yellow Kid,” but the link put me straight. :-)

Why does Tesla want to be called Al, and what has that got to do with the “woman” from METROPOLIS ?

I was mistakenly stuck on the pseudo-Paul Simon reference, too. I think we watched every episode of Quantum Leap.
