If Calvin goes to the playground by himself, Moe will make short work of him.

Dream on, Calvin…however, I do agree with your line of thinking…especially if that lesson is coming from a math text! ;)

The strip is actually dated 12-23. Miss Wormwood is certainly a taskmaster!

@flagmichael: The dates on these Calvin and Hobbes strips create hopeless confusion.Today’s strip was originally published December 5th, 1989. The 12/23 date on it was added this year for today’s rerun. So, Bill Watterson did not draw this strip with Calvin sitting in school the week of Christmas. There is also a 1994 date on today’s strip at the far right, but that is a carryover from when this strip was rerun during Bill Watterson’s second sabbattical. In 1994, the strip was run on December 13th.The month and day were handwritten on the original strips. When strips were rerun during Bill Watterson’s two sabbatticals, the handwritten month and day were erased and a new month and day were written in by hand, sometimes in a different panel of the strip. When a Calvin and Hobbes strip is rerun today on GoComics, the handwritten month and day are erased and the current date is printed on the strip using a computer font. Here is the original strip from December 5th, 1989. In the last panel you can see the “12-5” and the “1989.”Click here, or stretch the image below: Calvin and Hobbes (December 5, 1989)Now the next time you are at a party, you can impress everyone with your vast knowledge of Calvin and Hobbes comic strip dating trivia.

If you keep this up, Calvin, you’ll be adjourning to the principal’s office all by yourself.

Not to worry. Calvin will be joined by the ever faithful and ferocious Hobbs who will protect his friend and master to the death.

With all the obese kids who grow up to be obese and diabetic adults today, a little time on the playground is probably just what the doctor would order for good health.

In today’s strip, notice how Calvin is seen from the opposite side in the last panel. By changing the perspective, Bill Watterson has drawn the strip so that Calvin in panels 1, 2, and 4 is always facing Miss Wormwood in panel 3.This is different from the way that Charles Schulz generally drew Peanuts, with the desks consistently facing the same direction in all of the panels. But the teacher was never shown in Peanuts.

@neverenoughgold: Merry Christmas to you. Here’s one more detail for you that Bill Watterson cleverly worked into today’s strip: The teacher’s reply, “YES?” in panel 4 is actually pointing at Miss Wormwood in panel 3.

In the book of Revelation, there is a star named Wormwood. At first, that’s what I thought that Miss Wormwood was named after, but that’s not the case. Oh, well.

Calvin’s generosity is heartwarming, always looking out for his classmates, never zoning in on just himself…….. No wonder Susie likes him so much……..(huh?)…….

@heatherjasper: “Wormwood” is also the name of the demonic tempter who “sits on the shoulder” of a human Christian in an extremely clever book, The Screwtape Letters, written by C. S. Lewis:Click here: The Screwtape Letters (Wikipedia)

As an alternative, Miss Wormwood could adjourn to the playground and leave the class behind.
