Ellie’s reaction would have been mine, Thank goodness my grandkids live far away, and I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut. I do get a headache from rolling my eyes tho.
If this is Elly’s mom, then she only has herself to blame. Most people learn how to dress properly from their parents. Otherwise, that was rude. Drives me crazy when my mom makes snippy comments about me and then wonders why I’m unhappy.
Reminds me of the scenes in “The Christmas Story,” in which the mother bundles her youngest son, Randy, in so many layers, he can’t move his arms. “He looked like a tick that was about to pop,” said the narrator, Jean Shepherd.
My mom used to do this. I always thought it was mean in a passive-aggressive way. Talking nicey-nice to the kid and take digs at me at the same time when she KNEW I was standing there. I think I did the tongue thing a few times myself.
One thing I have tried to do as a doting Gram is to be in sync with the parents: to adhere to the same discipline, to provide the same healthy treats, and to not say anything critical of the parents in front of the children. I think I’ve scored an “A” on everything…but the treats.
comicsssfan: Good point, assuming he has the manual dexterity for it. Before he entered the ministry, my father was a watchmaker/jeweler. I became a museum modeler. Both of us eventually were hit by familial palsy.
Gweedo – It’s legal here !!! – Murray: Unfortunately, he died just before his 90th birthday, still writing a nature column for the local newspaper. I am only 81, playing in municipal bands, designing role-playing games, but miss being able to do even recreational model building.

My maternal grandparents lived in Arizona. I’m sure they babied me a little on how to dress cool.

From the smile on the grandmother’s face, I think she was coaxing Elizabeth into warmer clothes and teasing Elly at the same time.

Gran may think those things but speaking them within hearing of the child is a nO-NO. IMO ;0 Peace.
