I have found more useful the adage that anything not worth doing is not worth doing well. In a perfect world, or in the very small world of professional track & field, perhaps every single thing is worth your absolute best effort, but in the larger world, one is constantly confronted with things that really aren’t worth doing but somehow “must” be done (anyone who’s worked in a corporation knows what I’m talking about). And I have seen much pain self-inflicted (and many gifts self-wasted) by people who insist on doing their absolute best at every endeavor, regardless of its actual value.

Even with headlights on and reflectors of all types, car drivers still ignore motorcyclists. To be fair, they ignore everything else too. Hey, glad you missed being the news…

Damn straight. I had a similar encounter last night, with someone dressed really inappropriately crossing a 40 MPH four-lane after sunset. Fortunately, there was nobody driving in the lane to my left…

Speaking as an avid cyclist who wears a lot of high-viz yellow-green: To all of the morons out there wearing navy blue or black running and biking outfits with no lights, please get a f’ing clue.

Steve Prefontaine, “Pre”, was one of my few heros. The way he stood up to the corrupt T&F authorities fighting for athletes rights was unique. And he was virtually unbeatable for most of his career. He died way too soon. For anyone interested, one of the best sports documentaries of all time is “Fire on the Track” about Pre.
