Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for December 07, 2014
Transcript:
Dad: Your book is just ONE book. Phoebe: Our e-reader thingies have LOTS of books. Mom: I still like how books smell, and I like turning pages. Marigold: "Books" indeed. You humans and your newfangled devices. Your modern contraptions will never replace the crinkling sound and musty smell of unrolling an ancient scroll. Of course, the selection is limited... I am still waiting for The Corrections to come out on ancient scroll. Mom: Less talk, more read.

Does Marigold know those scrolls are made from animal hides?
Stellagal about 10 years ago
I was going to mention stone tablets, but I like Monster Hesh reply better.

I prefer both ways. I like reading from a bookā¦same reasons as Phoebeeās mom but I like the idea of a digital book. Which one I use depends

Iām with the Mom on this one. Technology is all well and good, but it canāt quite replace physical books just yet.

When Kindle and Nook smell like a Bindery, the scents of ancient paper, leather and glue, then I will say they are as good as physical books.#HardCopy

E-readers are fine for saving space, but you canāt beat a real book.

Agreed mam and is it me or did your hair grew longer?

I prefer both electronic and hard copy. It depends on use, and what my preferences are at the time. Having two versions of The Bible, a six volume Bible commentary, my science fiction and music all on my Kindle Fire is just plain convenient when I go somewhere which will cause me to wait a long time.

To Dana (and all yāall, too!): Very nice observation. Iām always looking for my favorite old books in hardcover format on Amazon. One of the first things I do when I get one is stick my nose deep in the middle pages and breathe deep. Reminds me of the smell of my grandfatherās books (including his leather-bound law books) when the bookcase doors were opened, and the first library I ever walked into nearly sixty years ago. Oh, the aromaā¦! THAT being said, I can only imagine what Marigoldās scrolls offer her when she unrolls āem, and what weāre missing. Thank you, Dana, for a nod to real books.

I liked books. Unfortunately, you canāt make the print bigger, and not everything comes in large print.

Books: you donāt have to plug them in, they wonāt crash on you, thereās no fear of CRT-type radiation or equivalent, you can go back and forth with them and skip around all you want. And you STILL donāt have to plug them in or use ANY electricity, reading lamps notwithstanding. And you get stimulated to use your imagination, to make pictures in your mind. Three cheers for books and the printed word!

I too prefer paper books, sure they might take up more space but no worrying about the battery dieing, of course the fact that due to my work at a library I have a free subscription also helps

Wood grain (including paper and wood pencils) causes very unpleasant chills in my spine. THATāS why I donāt read physical books anymore, despite having so many books in my closet that I want to read.

Thatās what most book officionados say when asked why they prefer real books to the online thing. :)
