Even after reading the comments, I still don’t know what’s going on.

Cats have evolved. They ignore the can opener but respond to the “thwick” of the pop-top can (at least, mine do).

The colorist thinks the knife is a finger.

He’s not interested in getting Luddy’s attention, as long as he’s in the kitchen, it takes nothing to get that from the cat with the one track mind. Not so with Janis, who’s a bit more complicated, as human beings, especially women, are wont to be.
