Does anyone else get a lot of pop-ups from this website that somehow don’t get blocked?! (I don’t get them elsewhere and I don’t have them “allowed” here…) Kinda drives me nutty.

You haven’t read the Bible if you don’t think He has a sense of humor. Would you let a schlub with a bad temper and a wavering personality walk on water just cause HE thought it was a good idea? Would you suggest to woodworkers who get all sorts of sawdust in their eyes that they need to watch out for logs when the get judgmental? Jesus could have played the Catskills.

Whatever happened to the guy with the tomorrow sign? wouldn’t he be standing next to him with an angered look on his face?

WaitingMan, just because a lot of religious stiffs don’t have a sense of humor doesn’t mean God doesn’t. Unfortunately, a lot of those stiffs translated a lot of scripture to fit their own uptight visions of the world. I imagine the real heaven is a lot more humorous than even Wiley’s. But then, I guess I’ll have to wait to find out.

bostonoski, I get those pop ups, too. And I also have them blocked. Mostly I ignore them, but they are annoying.

I don’t read the bible because someone told me the ending and spoiled it for me.

I wish I could see the look on all the faces of the religeous nuts when they die and find out there is no heaven or hell. I am sure I would piss myself laughing. Churches start wars (very unchristian) but atheists do not (fairly christian values I find). Go figure !!!

steverino, the pun Jesus made is even funnier. Peter means pebble or small stone. The word he used when he said, Upon this rock I will build my church is more like the word for boulder. Jesus certainly didn’t mean he was building his church on someone as unstable as Peter!

I heard a radio show not all that long ago where they were discussing research by some social scientists who discovered (to their surprise) that religions prevented more wars than they started.

…and the ones that were started for “religious” reasons were simply cases of people using religion as a mask for their own very human greed and selfishness.

@Wiley: Religion has often been used as an instrument in persuading people to join in a war. However, war - as I understand - has always started because of greed. And greed is human nature rather than a religious attribute.

Religion has never caused a war? The crusades, Galileo. duh. I only name things Christianity did because a lot of people are christen and I don’t like a lot of them. so HA!

Truth is that religion MIXED with politics causes a lot of wars. Atheisim and politics has that same effect which you can get testimonies to from the Stalin and mao citizens.

Jesus, on the other hand, had a zealot and the tax collector with him. Kind of like having Rush and Keith walking along together. helps distinguish the real thing from a fraud or a person with their own agenda.

Blaise was an interesting Catholic, W. and that seems to be where you get a lot of your mythology. He was more of the mystic bent if I remember right and that seems a bit of a practical quote from him. What you guys don’t really understand (and the clowns that claim to rep us on the media scene are equally as clueless) is that it’s about Christ, not religion. Blaise may have been thinking of that oddity when he said the above.

Fun thing is the genetic research shows we are predisposed to seek God. Meaning, if the theory of evolution so many atheists tout is correct, seeking God is a plus for our survival. (The God Gene)

Do I now have to explain history to you? Crusades were fought to restore Christian Control (operative word - Control) of the holy land over a 200 year period.

Church’s war against Galileo was again to prove a point - that Galileo was wrong and ‘safe science’ was right. This was to ensure that masses follow the church and not go against the teachings. If you had to use one word to describe the situation, would you call this religion? I would call it differently. Control comes to mind.

Okay unedumicated agnostic point of view.

People fight wars for their religions. They also fight wars for other reasons. Even without wars many people have been killed in the name of religion. Religion is created by man, which is why there are so many of them to choose from. If there is a God he probably didn’t want people killing people in the name of religion.

Atheists never started a war? Hmm–the Korean war was started by the North Koreans, who were atheists. Communist (Atheist) China invaded Tibet and did their best to get rid of Buddhism and monastic government.

But I do like the strip. Which is why I never worry about when the world will end. I worry about what I can do to be ready, and then the end of the world won’t matter either way.

Religion is the root of all (okay, not all, but a good portion of it) evil. It is certainly the root of most social and political problems!

The Crusades, the wars which devastated Europe following the Reformation, conversion by the sword of native Americans, the “cleansing” of Judea in the Old Testament, the Arab-Israeli wars of the 20th Century, Kashmir, Ulster… The difference is often semantic.

If you’re fighting to take land that’s held by others but God has promised YOU, is that a territorial war or a religious war?

On the other point, it seems less an issue (to me, anyway) whether God can make a joke than whether He can take a joke. If not, well, you know what they say…

Please,,, I must agree with the above poster who said that wars are started in the name of religion. I seem to remember someone within the last decade who said, “God told me to invade Iraq.”

Religion… The truth (and for this, you will have to go and read up on wars) behind wars are usually pride, greed, hatred, lust and envy. Guns… The truth is people and guns both kill people. A sane person would not kill a single person even if given all guns in the world. An insane one would not be able to kill 35 people with bow and arrow (or a large knife for that matter).

In the end, weird dudes start wars and kill people with the help of a lot of firepower. So there you go.

My point exactly, attyush. Religions, like guns are not inherently evil, but guns and religion can both be used as weapons by the insane/greedy/hateful…

Thanks for the input everyone. It wasinteresting to see how many replies were to do with my comment. Evil people do start wars, that is true, they also use religion advance their cause(except the Crusades in which the advancement of religion was the cause). Believing in God is one thing but religions are another. In a world without religions it would be harder to start wars. Like the late, great John Lennon said “Imagine no religion”

@LuvH8 - The point is that no-one has ever started a war in the name of atheism. In the name of religious or political dogma sure, but never to further the cause of atheism. No one has ever used atheism to justify killing either.

A lot more wars have been fought over trade routes. Most religious groups strive to help rather than hurt. It’s governments that start wars, not churches.
