Transcript:
Calvin: "I'm the decisive take-charge type! I'm a natural leader!"
Calvin: "See, we'll go THIS way!"
Hobbes: "Have fun"
Calvin: "The problem is that nobody wants to go where I want to lead them"
I remember once seeing a minute or two of one of those pointless media events on the Nasa TV channel with an astronaut on the International Space Station, I think Sunita Williams who had the nominal title of ‘Commander’ of the ISS. You heard a school kid’s voice, reading a question about “leadership” that sounded like a teacher had instructed to be asked on the assumption it would provoke some kind of phoney inspirational type of response. But her honest answer was that pretty much all they do is follow instructions from the ground. I wish I could have seen the teacher’s disappointed face.
I disagree. Congress has few Calvins. Most members of Congress don’t lead, they ask what the polls say. Consider the 1957 book “Profiles in Courage”, by JFK, and you realize how rare those qualities are.
@Hobbes, :o)Apparently, Hobbes was concerned about a potential brush with danger …or death, even (Snagglepuss).Btw, brush-off seems to be one of those words that can be hyphenated or not, as you choose.
@LeadingEdge,Hobbes probably would go for a tuna sandwich. If Calvin really was decisive and a take-charge type, he would do as you have suggested, but that’s because you are on the LEADING Edge. Btw, Hobbes most likely wouldn’t go for a carrot dangling in front of his nose. I don’t think Hobbes would “carrot” all for a carrot.
On Tuesday, ArthurAllen wrote:@Hobbes: It may be too late in the day to get your attention, but I was just thinking of a wordy Peanuts cartoon, that ends with Linus (I think) also complaining about cartoon strips with too many words. I think about that strip when people claim that Peanuts never broke the fourth wall.
@ArthurAllen: It may be too late in the day to get your attention,:>) but is this the Peanuts strip that you were thinking of?They are leaning on a wall, but it’s not the fourth wall. It looks like they are staring off into space but not looking at the reader. Maybe they are leaning on the fifth wall.Click here: Peanuts (March 8, 1962)
It’s so much more than decisiveness. People have to believe your decisions are based on wisdom and experience. Hobbes knows they’re not, so he chooses to follow his instincts, which are far more reliable.

Well what if you were in a desert? Would you want to go into a dangerous place and get killed by drowning in quicksand?

You tend to want to lead them into a path of destruction.

Calvin, first you find out where the others are going then you get in front of them. Problem solved.

Looks like Hobbes gave Calvin the brush-off, because Calvin was going off into the brush.

@Puddleglum2: Come to think of it, Hobbes looks a little like Snagglepuss.
