In our family, when we were young,if we weren’t able to fit into clothes, they were handed down to the next kid, or the next cousin. Now that I’m old and have no one to ‘hand down’ to, I give everything that no longer fits to Goodwill…
A few years ago, I lost a load of weight. I was thrilled with myself, and in celebration, I gave away all my larger clothing — swearing to the walls and windows that I would never gain back those excess pounds. Last week, I went looking for a favourite pair of pants only to realize they had been jettisoned during my THIN period. Pity. They would have fit me quite nicely, now!
I agree with Nab. I hardly dress up and I mostly wear casual clothes. But there are occasions where I want to look nice or professional and it’s nice to have something already in my closet rather than spending money.
That whole idea of John teasing Elly has largely gone away by now. However, the fat jokes have not. Those were recycled with Michael becoming a know-it-all smartalec and telling his mother she was fat.

" In this strip, she avoids the whole “make John look like an insensitive husband” scenario which was one of the mainstays of the early strips."
True. This strip evokes the stupid husband meme. As if John would not know why clothes that she once wore she is now discarding. Bweep-Bwow!

John should realize that the next step after “These are out of style” is “I need to buy some more clothes.”

I would not give my stuff to Goodwill. Take a look at how much the CEO and other officers of the company make. Hardly anything left for the needy.
