Gunther: "For as long as I can remember, I've been on a safe, steady path. Then all of a sudden, I made a wild detour to Peru with Rosa" Gunther: "Now I'm back on my original path. But... It just feels wrong. Like it's going nowhere" Gunther: "I keep doing the old things, but... should I be doing new things?" Quill: "I think you gotta get up off your rut"

For a second, Greg must have been watching “Scooby Doo”.. Or Quill has. He seems as though he wants to “kick Gunther in his Rut(t)”……

First things first. Get rid of the red shirt. It does not bode well.

At least it’s not a blood-red shirt. Or even worse, a poopy-brown shirt……

“Wherever you go, there you are.”*That song by Alan Jackson (?) rang true with me. You can put yourself anywhere in the world and it will expand your horizons. But it WON’T expand your life. You’re still the same ol’ you. Until you summon the courage to “get off your rutt.” Maybe Qu is also going to be a counselor.*(Two days without any exclamation marks— but I almost slipped up today.)

Gunther needs to decide what his goals are. That will tell him what he should do.
dre7861 over 9 years ago
Dude, you have problems if you’re “worried” about Gunther’s sexuality because of the color of his bed frame, given that a comic strip works with a limited color palette. And even if it was pink, so what?
thebigboot over 9 years ago
Poor Gunther, he finally woke up to life isn’t easy. Took him long enough.

OK Gunther, here’s something new you can try: Go visit your old classmate Aaron Hill in Hawaii. Maybe you can move in together, in the volcano. Bye!

OMG there’s so much he could be doing WHILE getting his degree. He can’t just keep talking about it. He has to go out and see what the university has to offer. If he liked being in a different country, well then he can study abroad. How long is this particular arc going to go on without some kind of resolution? sigh
If you just go to class and come back to your room, never making friends or joining clubs or attending events, then yes your life will seem like an endless boring rut.
thebigboot over 9 years ago
I’ve said this every time. When she was showing interest in Gunther the slut comments that were being thrown were laughable at best.
Sisyphos over 9 years ago
Gunther’s deficient analysis leads him to incorrect conclusions and being stuck in a rut. His premises are not valid. Maybe Quill can jolt him back to reality….
thebigboot over 9 years ago
Right, and I agree with you with Gunther but it seems a few other commenters would rather jump straight to the slut route even if it’s not been suggested.

Dave53, I was just going to leave a comment for Sheriff, to see if he would be able to explain more about the color differences, since he apparently got tied up with real world concerns after lunch yesterday.

Of course you should be DOING NEW THINGS Gunther!!!!! Geez!!!! But, you should also do well in your college courses too!!! Eventually at some point, you will value your college degree. If you do not yet know for sure what you wish for your major, keep taking courses that are part of Moony’s General Education Program requirments. And, spend at lease SOME OF THE TIME you are going to spend DOING NEW THINGS….. in DOING SOME DAMN SERIOUS THOUGHT ABOUT what YOU want in life and as a career.

Pipe – Delayed reply from Tuesday – here’s why I think “Luann en Espanol” is noticeably darker than the mainstream version. Plus some background process that leads up to this result.Greg supplies a grayscale image to GoComics. It has 100% black line art complemented by various percentages of black fills (i.e. grays) and gradient fills. This is the art that goes to newspapers that print the daily comics in black ink only. When I get the art, I have to isolate the 100% black art from the grays in PhotoShop. Using the 100% black line work as a guide, I fill areas with color using a standards sheet that specs colors for skin, hair, lips and some recurring elements. But for the most part, clothing and backgrounds are my call. Hey,mistakes are made, but nobody gets hurt.Almost without fail, the solid grays that Greg uses are NOT re-introduced to the final art. That usually results in a muddy looking hue. However, when Greg uses a gradient fill, usually in the background, it’s important to bring that element into the final art to preserve the design effect he wants. To do this expediently (trust me – you have to work fast) it’s easiest to overlay the entire grayscale image on top of the color and then go back and lighten up the undesired solid darks to the correct value. This leaves the gradient Greg supplied merged with the color I chose for the background. Knowing that region will be merged with a grey blend, I keep that color light in value. Greg’s draftsmanship is remarkably consistent and he makes it easy for a colorist to anticipate what to do next. My guess is that the strip that Greg supplies is copied and diverted to a translator/editor at GoComics. That person probably works in conjunction with an artist who copy fits the Spanish dialogue into the word balloons after clearing out the English text. Then the Spanish file, grey shades all is merged with the colored file (sans English text) and there you get the overlaid effect of grey on top of color. Now that the subject has been brought up, I’ll see if there’s a way for there’s a way for Luann en Espanol to get the same coloration as the English version. Full credit to the people who noticed the discrepancy.

Greg gets special treatment in a lot cases becasue his style allows for it and he’s just a “most excellent dude” in the S. California tradition. I add many color gradients to formerly solid white areas just to add some visual interest. It helps the characters “pop” out to the foreground. FYI – I am looking fwd to meeting Karen in a few weeks. there should be as many laughs as eye rolls.

This is a “cartoon”, just like Peanuts, so we get to have fun with it, put a different spin on things. Each day is like a jump ball, play with it.

Something more disturbing about the room are the pictures on teh door. Enlarge to see that Gunther or Qu are all posting shots of Gunther & Mom, not of other friends (including girlfriends). Not even the modern equivalent of a Farrah Fawcett poster.

Thanks for the tips. It’s just that I thought I had read that those archive strip comments were only there for a limited time and would eventually be deleted after say 6 months or so?

RB2… actually…. Gunther isn’t taking any engineering classes at the moment. He is taking calculus, biology lab (always stated as lab….. but where the hell is the lecture?) and I believe one other non-engineering class. My interpretation is that he is “bummed” with the whole college “thing” at the moment…. which is frustrating in and of itself. Regardless of which career he wants, he will benefit from college and he should embrace it while he is there.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member over 9 years ago
I really think RB2, that saying the family having family photographs on the wall is creepy and unnatural is QUITE odd. In my home, I have a myriad of shots of me, my wife, my kids, grandkids, my pets, my….. FAMILY all over the house. I would suggest MOST folks do this very thing.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Although many of your speculations are fun to read and ride the edge of possibility in interesting ways…. I do think the statement that photos on the wall are there to be showing how their family is “creepy and unnatural” is off the mark today.

Okay, but I could swear that I read that in a comment from Levy from a long time ago.

Elvis doted on his mother, but his parents were married until she died, so it wasn’t the same as Gunther and his single mom (and Mr. Gray). Also, and quite unlike Ginther, Elvis most certainly was not terrified of intimacy with women!

Quill should also invite Gunth to come to New York, where he can enroll in design school and become the costume or fashion designer he was born to be.
seismic-2 Premium Member over 9 years ago
I suspect Gunther’s plan was to be intimate with his wife 2.5 times during the course of their marriage.

RB2… I do not think it would be creepy if that is the totality of their family.
