Benevolent societies like the Oddfellows have been declining as welfare-state government takes over more and more societal functions that used to be left to private charity.

Some people think using government power to force people to be benevolent is benevolent. Quite the opposite, it is based on the idea that only government knows how people should live. Where is the benevolence in that?
