It’s very dramatic, but so far, Jimmy is only whacked in the forehead. If you’ll remember, Doubleup was claiming that he was being good on parole, so he’s got a high motivation to hold back from actually killing Jimmy in front of two police witnesses. While being burned by a cigar can’t be pleasant, it’s hardly life-threatening, and doesn’t justify killing Jimmy in return. I suppose it all depends on how bad of a temper Doubleup has. I think he can have a bad temper.
Another superb single-panel strip. Payback for the cigar singe is swift. More of the good stuff from Team Tracy. The last time we were graced with the single-panel format was the line up of Blackhearts on March 28, if memory serves.
Panorama of tit-for-tat as DoubleUp flicks Jimmy’s head in retribution for yesterday’s cigar-burn. Will DoubleUp try to flay the fat holdout in the presence of two armed detectives? —I don’t think so, Rather, how will Tracy and Sam react to what is playing out before them? The whipmaster must show restraint, restraint!
But this here IS the Major Crime Unit, we’re reminded of that - on their cups every now and then !
Murder IS a Major Crime, but you’d think a Multi Billion Dollar Gold Robbery “TRUMP$” everything ? ?
Will *Chief Patton
be “calling” Tracy anytime soon ? Say, a progress Report on the BIG One?
Heck ! Even in Dick Tracy ‘comic time’, It’s been more than a week, going on 2, andTracy’s now instead, been diverted to neighbourhood crime without a scintilla of ‘known’ connection to the Big One ! ?
Unusual lack of ‘focus’ on his Biggest Case of the last Decade ?
Fellow Tracy fans, I love this strip because it’s one of the only surviving Old School strips that concentrate on contrast and line weights—in my opinion, it is FAR better without color—today’s single panel is particularly stunning in B&W—I invite you all to go here—(I have added a few spaces to allow the post)—http ://www. chron.com/entertainment/comics-games/comic/Dick-Tracy/
Great stuff!! Great stuff!!Team Tracy has outdone themselves today.-I really like the character development we’ve seen over the past few weeks. At first, Jimmy Choo Shooz didn’t seem like much, but he’s become a cold-blooded killer who’d have fit in well with the classic villains like Flattop, or someone Elliot Ness would go after on “The Untouchables.”And Doubleup has become interesting, smart and even funny. Judging from the comments, I’d say he’s becoming a fan favorite. Fan favorite. (Sorry; couldn’t resist.)In fact, this story is playing out like an Untouchables episode, with the interaction of the criminals and Jimmy’s murder spree the main focus.Love this stuff.
Judging from the position of the whip, I think it will loop around Jimmy’s neck, he’ll make a break for it (at which point Double Up will lose his grip on the whip) tumble down the open ‘Storage’ door, snag the handle of the whip on something, and end up hanging himself.
Sorry, that should have been “Mr. Bigg,” not “Mr. Big.” Also, I was going to say that it’s interesting how often Sam doesn’t get to say anything.
In the previous story, Sam spoke 19 out of 20 appearances, and Tracy spoke 24 out of 26 appearances, so it wasn’t so lopsided as the current story.
Also, considering that the previous story was only 10 days longer than where we are now in the present story, Tracy and Sam have been seen a lot. The previous story was very focused on the Nitrates, Sprocket in particular. This one is more focused on the police works, despite the perception by some that the police aren’t doing enough.
I saw that….I’m saying it’s not the whip that hit Jimmy…..perhaps someone else with a silencer weapon. But I suppose we will just have to see tomorrow…….
Do you play fantasy sports ? If so, my brother Ken would welcome another player.
Nope, it’s not something I’m into. I’ve never participated. This whole project is to try to determine the flow of the comic under Mike Curtis and how it differs from Chester Gould or anyone else who has written it over the years. It’s going to take some time to get to that goal, but I’m updating my database every couple of days with the current story(ies).
Syd is the expert on many aspects of Dick Tracy though I sometimes need some interpretation of his remarks. I’m hoping he’ll help me out with today’s, because he lost me somewhere.
I just had a thought that Tracy or Sam could use their Wrist Wizard to light up the room a bit. Probably would be a good idea to carry around a small LED light in case of situations like this. Fumbling around in the dark is risky business, and as we know from previous stories who knows what they’ll find when the lights come back on.
Doubleup is out on bail, not out on parole. There is a big difference.
Oops, you’re right! Possession of any kind of weapon is a violation of bail (at least in Canada) and I think that might include the whip. Doubleup is likely off to jail. Just when we were getting to know him, too!
Vista Bill or anyone else. What happened to the money train? One day, we were following a story about a money train. The next, we have a story with a character named Jimmy Choo Shooz.

I’m thinking it isn’t Doubleup that nailed Jimmy but possibly our friendly neighborhood light switch operator based on how that whip looks.

Morning Vista Bill, et al! Looks like Jimmy got hit with the side of the whip, and without a full swing. Painful, but probably not fatal.

Superb ART and layout in a single panel *. . .
It doesn’t ever come much better than this in Dick Tracy
Sort of rendition that Award Judges will likely hold up and examine as part of their ‘consideration’.
Beautiful piece for someone’s collection !
