Beethoven’s Fifth was Britain’s theme music for WWII because of Winnie’s V-for-victory sign. In Morse code, the letter V is di-di-di-dah. (Dot dot dot dash)
Musician/composer/lutier David Bromberg told a better version of this old joke. His band was doing a rock version of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. They hired a four baritones from the New York Opera do help with the 4th movement, the choral movement. The opera guys were very unfamiliar with the recreational pharmaceuticals oft utilized by modern rock and roll groups and were thoroughly intoxicated when it was their time to perform. Their sheet music would not stay on the music stands, so the roadies tied it down for them. So that was the situation—The basses were loaded, there were two out, the score was tied, and it was the bottom of the 9th.

Mahler’s Fifth Symphony would have given them time to sober up (about 2.5 times as long as Beethoven’s Fifth).
