Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for July 10, 2015
Transcript:
Calvin: "I'm writing a fund-raising letter" Calvin: "The secret to getting donations is to depict everyone who disagrees with you as the enemy. Then you explain how they're systematically working to destroy everything you hold dear" Calvin: "It's a war of values! Rational discussion is hopeless! Compromise is unthinkable! Our only hope is well-funded antagonism, so we need your money to keep up the fight!" Hobbes: "How cynically unconstructive" Calvin: "Enmity sells"

It’s not like Enmity is the end of the world for money.

Enmity smells? Yes, indeed. We’ve plenty and enough already. But gosh, ask Calvin, it’s SO much fun…

I get emails from politicians and groups that fall into my political or think they do. I dump them or mark them read. What I’m trying to figure out is how Rick Santorum got my email address.

Even the most hostile campaigns of today are mild compared to those in the early days of the republic (back when it was still a republic.)

Change a few words, here and there, promise irrational rewards in the “afterlife” and you have ISIS to a tee!

Sometimes Calvin sounds like a little boy…sometimes not. Maybe he wants to be a reformer.

Whenever I read political comments on GoComics that involve name-calling, I just sadly shake my head. Name-calling is what little children do. (If any of the posters who constantly name-call on any of the political or non-political comics are ACTUALLY little children, then I humbly apologize to them.)

@leftwingpatriot: Yes, yesterday’s discussion about political discussions was a good precursor to today’s strip and discussion. Perhaps you are psychic…..

When it comes to political issues, I am sorry to say I am totally one-sided! Yes, it is absolutely true I detest every politician, regardless of their political leanings. Of course, once I discover what the individual stands for, I may make an exception.
I am struggling to figure out just what that is…

When I get polling inquiries from either party, I generally respond. But I never send money. I try to tell them where I think they are wrong, and where they are right. The Repubs have stopped asking. The Dems still ask. I write to politicians and NGOs all over the country on issues that interest me. I try to not be merely a scold, but to also tell them when they have done something or taken a position which I applaud. Of course, the only ones who respond are those for whom I am a constituent, and that’s fine. But when the things a politician is asked to vote on affect the entire country, they should be willing and able to hear from citizens throughout the country. The Repubs are better about that than the Dems.Interest groups – and charities – frame everything as a crisis, an emergency, a critical moment/need. It is astounding how many crises occur in a year, which is why I never send them any money either. There are charities to which I used to donate, but have stopped because it was clear that every dollar I sent was being spent on sending me more fundraising appeals. I try to support, in the main, charities that are apolitical in nature; hunger, the Arts, environmental causes. Some end up becoming somewhat political because of the priorities of one or another political party, but the causes themselves are not overtly political and do not endorse candidates.

@PaintThe Dust: I was careful not to say that there are only two types of political discourse.Heh, heh, heh, (etc.)
Hobbes Premium Member over 9 years ago
@neverenoughgold: There are various paths that tomorrow’s discussion may follow. It may take discourse, or it may take dat course.

Thanks, @rgcviper. I always see your comments because I start each day by reading the end of the previous day’s comments.
