Dick: We're in luck, Thad. Matilda's still here, and look, there's Sampson and Walter! Thad: I don't know how you keep them all straight, Dick. Dick: Well, there are only 73 whooping cranes on Matagorda, Thad. Besides, they're as individual as you and I. Color, markings, behavior patterns, each bird has its own eccentricities. For instance, Sam there is gay. And Tilly won't eat water beetles unless they've been strained. And Walter spends a lot of time with the ducks. Thad: And all this is condoned by the wildlife service? Dick: It's a sanctuary, Thad. Thad: I think I'm beginning to understand the whooping crane's brush with extinction.

Sam certainly isn’t going to help the whooping crane survive.

Whooping cranes equal food, if this the island Duke is stranded on. I predict trouble ahead.

They’re probably threatened by whooping cough.

The Whooping Crane population is being expanded by a joint effort of the United States and Canada. Follow this epic at http://operationmigration.org/ as Whooping Crane chicks are raised and then follow ultralight aircraft to guide them on their first migration from Wisconsin to Florida. When my Reserve unit (from Wisconsin) was called up for the Gulf War, we spent time at Fort Bragg. One day we had a joint class with guys from Oklahoma. The officer in charge, one of our guys, started off with a joke.
A game warden caught a hunter with a loon. After reading him the riot act, he started writing the guy up. He asked, out of curiosity, what loon tasted like. “Oh, kinda like a cross between a bald eagle and a whooping crane.”
All the Wisconsin guys howled. The Oklahoma guys all said “Whaaa…?”
After a couple of tries we spotted a pair at Necedah NWR a couple of weeks ago. Yay!

So the talking parrot who visited Duke and Honey may have been a refugee from this bird sanctuary?

Locally, the Sand Hill Cranes have adapted rather well to Suburban Life. They wander the neighborhood in groups of 4 to 8 and really Appreciate it when someone mows the lawn, making “Dinner” easier to catch.A freshly mowed lawn makes it harder for the bugs to Hide..They have adapted so well that they no longer have any Fear of moving Cars. They just watch calmly while you ease past their little flock. Even if you have to drive on the Grass to get around the ones standing in the middle of the road..There are also occasional Flocks (20 or 30 birds to a flock) of a smaller White bird that has a Beak as long as the entire rest of it’s body. About 8 to 10 inches of Beak on a bird with an 8 inch long Body is Impressive..
