I don’t care what those self-serving, grant-hungry, anarchist astronomers say, Pluto. You’ll always be a planet for me!

With all the cool new pictures of Pluto, I got out my copy of the National Geographic book Our Universe, from 1980. In that book Pluto was depicted as a crater-marked planet like the Moon. Even back then they had a section called, “Should Pluto be considered a planet?”

I wish I could find a link, but I recently read that the “vote” to relegate Pluto to dwarf status was carefully timed for the tail-end of a conference, when the very large majority of the voters had already departed…wish I could relocate that, and/or determine whether it had any impact on the result, but I think it was part of the recent fly-by coverage, and suggested that there might be a sea change were a new vote taken…I guess there are variations of the old mnemonic – the one I grew up with was “My Very Educated Mother Just Served us Nine Pickles”…I’m not that crazy about ‘pickles’, but I do miss Pluto.

I agree that Pluto does not fulfill the “requirements” for a planet, but, since it was given Planetary Status, it should be given an “exception”. Call it an “Honorary” title.
