Caption: Why pedantic-man never made it as a superhero.
Sign reads: Dead Man's Curve
Car: Ok, that makes no sense because dead men don't drive...duh! Now if it said, soon-to-be dead man's curve, then...
It’s amazing that someone who is this fussy about wording actually lived long enough to earn a driver’s license. Someone should have punched out his lights long ago…
Think of it like the “dead man switch” on a train. If someone dies at the controls, he relaxes his grip on the switch and the train comes to a stop. They could use those in cars too; I know at least one case where a driver had a heart attack behind the wheel and then crashed.
That road feature was named by famous civil engineer and compulsive sign writer, Harold Arthur Deadman, in honour of his father, Xavier Deadman, and is only a danger to people distracted by the sign.
it reminds m e of the man in texas or florida last week who while with his girl friend read the sign no swimming alligators said f#@k the alligators..i am not afraid…lthen jumped in and was promptly eaten..maybe the sign should have read no swimming COMMA alligators..nah..still dead..
There was a series this week on Slate.com reviewing a new book “The League of Regrettable Superheroes”, which displays actual comics from the 1930s onward of “super heroes” whose concepts were either ill-considered from the first or at least not adequately developed. “Pedantic Man” would fit right in.
I always thought a pedant was someone who enjoyed showing off his knowledge, especially of words. Not to sound pedantic, but I don’t think the word is used correctly in this context.
On a somewhat related topic, I will be curious to see, if the new generation of cars with “nanny” controls, (lane keeping assist, (self steering) and accident avoidance assist (self braking) actually reduce accidents, or, because of todays increasingly inattentive drivers who’s faces are buried in their smartphones, more severe accidents increase as drivers become dependent on the car to bail them out of trouble.
..Kvldulf, I think it may be a trick the Wiley Bears are pulling….People know by now not to go towards those cute smiling bears….So he keeps going straight, the car shatters on impact, cracking open like a Walnut, making the nuts easier to eat..Good plan…Those sure are some wily bears , there, man….
Texas once had signs saying, “watch for ice on bridge”, which rather lost its punch in July. Now they say, “bridge may ice in cold weather”. I once did see ice on bridge in July. The transition from road pavement to bridge pavement often leaves a lot to be desired. Apparently the bump was sufficient to bounce a bag of ice from a pickup bed, because enough of unscattered ice was sufficient to anchor the bag under the largest pile.
“A 60’s song by Jan and Dean.”-Also a Mr. Pickles episode. From the Wiki:Dead Man’s Curve is the fifth episode of the first season of Mr. Pickles and the fifth episode overall. It originally aired on October 19, 2014.
Yes, I said that. but wondered what would happen when people got overly dependent on them when they are not paying any attention. The best safety device is still the nut behind the wheel.
Night-Gaunt49: “Further South it doesn’t get as cold for as long as it use to.” I have notice that “up north” along the Red River. We had a mild winter in Bonham, likewise summer so far; we haven’t broken 100F yet, although likely will before the month is out. Our humidity is rising, but still nothing like yours. 100F 30% is not as bad as 90-90.
“Dead Man’s Curve” is quite possible: The cliff side was/is owned by a man who has died, but his estate is still in probate, so legally it still belongs to him.

No, the sign is correct. You’re dead. You just don’t know it yet.

I’m pretty sure that you meant to say it was a curb ball. A curve ball would make no sense in this context.

I guess if the sign said “Bear Left” they still would have gone over the cliff……

Well, where am staying, drivers cannot read ‘STOP’ at the intersection; which gives the pedestrian a 50-50 chance to live.

should be renamed “Texting Man’s Curve” since accidents from that distraction are up 400% this year.
