@Linguist—-I want to compliment you on your excellent explanation of the history & basis of the Andy Capp strip. I know this strip goes back a ways, & seeing as how I am now 70, can relate to the way people did things back in that era. A local pub/bar, was one of the fewer forms available, of a place to go for some companionship & entertainment back then.
Good morning everyone.-——-Funny photos and comic, beviek. Thanks for the laughs.-——-*Affie: 36C is 96.8F. The temp in Chattannoga, TN will be similar today.-——-Be happy and healthy my friends.
@CFinFLThank you. My mother was from the North of Ireland and I visited relatives there often over the years. I lived in Dun Laoghaire and in Dublin, Ireland in the late ’60’s and worked in England, as well, so I have more than a passing acquaintance with pubs.
@ProfsHubbyThank you for your comment yesterday..
@afficionado1) Specifically, the first documented references to “hot dogs” were in a September 28, 1893 Knoxville Journal and in an October 19, 1895 edition of the Yale Record that contained a reference to “The Kennel Club”, which was a lunch wagon on campus that sold hot sausages in buns, which were referred to as “hot dogs”. 2) At least you got a card. When I had that badly infected tooth pulled a few weeks ago, I didn’t even get a Laurel & Hardy handshake from the tooth fairy.3) Why keep changing your avatar ? My motto is never switch, never worry. ( Of course that refers to drinks but…)
Today’s punchline was telegraphed ahead of time so much it might as well be a charging trumpeting elephant leading a charging tromboning symphony……….
We can assume a couple of things, I think.1) It is winter time, hence the ladies overcoats.2)Most factories in England had no central heating, so the temperature inside was almost as cold ( and sometimes colder ) than the outside.
So I’d assume Flo and Ruby each acquired their rosy red rhis .
Re: Red noses. We have had this discussion before.Mahoney smudges the ladie’s noses to indicate they’ve done a hard day’s work. He smudges the men’s noses to indicate that they are drunk. The USA colorist assumes that any smudged nose should be colored red or pink. What this means is that the cartoonist should color his work himself.

Nebraska has been in the upper 90º’s C with high humidity so the heat index has been at 100º+C. We’ve had heat warnings most of the week!
