I like grapefruit, as long as there’s a little sugar on it. But there is such a thing as too much (you can have too much of anything, even if it’s healthy) and she seems to have put on way too much. It is funny, though.
There really nothing wrong with sugar — it’s just the amount of it that we consume. You know. too much of a good thing is a bad thing. It wouldn’t hurt us to use a tad less.
“the same can be said for tobacco.”~~~~~~~~~~~~~Nothing good can be said about tobacco. It is a poison to which I was addicted for sixty years. It was only with tremendous, painful effort that I was finally able to break away from it. I really could use the money I spent (lost) on that horrid habit. Better late than never, I guess. wish I’d never touched that first one, ’tho.
Sort of man-made, as Wikipedia describes it as an accidental cross between two other species. But does that automatically make it gross? How do you feel about nectarines?
When I was a kid, my mother bought Kraft “grapefruit in a jar” (that was what we called it). It was in its own juice (no sugar added) and we often had that or fresh grapefruit before dinner, as Mom wanted to make sure we were all getting enough vitamin C. Delicious! Mom also still has a set of those grapefruit spoons that have a serrated edge on one side to cut out the sections from a half-grapefruit.
Geeky grapefruit trivia: on the original Star Trek series, the alien drink in the episode “The Corbomite Maneuver” was actually pink grapefruit juice.
We ate a lot of grapefruit at our house when I was little.Dad had a service station and would trade citrus with the local farmers for gas.I was at my moms house last year and came across one of those little curved grapefruit knives in her kitchen..Brought back some fond memories of breakfast with dad(he put salt on grapefruit and watermelon.)
I’m bordeline diabetic and my mother was what is now called ‘Type 2’.
We both had a lot of consultations with Endocrinologists (docs with expertise in this area) and nutritionists.
You don’t ‘get’ diabetes from sugar. Diabetes is a disease that means the body can’t handle sugar the right way.
What used to be called ‘juvenile diabetes’ and is now Type 1 is with you at birth. Your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. Type 1 diabetes often have to take insulin from the time they are little kids.
Too much blood glucose (blood level of sugar is high) causes terrible problems, everything from loss of eyesight to loss of feeling in feet (leading to serious injuries and infections and sometimes amputation.)
Type 1 diabetes is absolutely associated with genetics. Type 2 shows up later in life, and can also be genetic. But it is Type 2 that appears in people who have the genetic inclination for it AND are overweight.
Excessive consumption of empty calories from sugar can lead to being overweight. But so can excessive consumption of fried foods.
Moderation is best, but hardest to achieve. Many folks with Type 2 are able to avoid going on insulin or other meds by careful monitoring of the intake of carbohydrates; counting carbs is apparently a better method than trying to count intake of sugar alone…

I love grapefruit juice. I quit drinking it because I was told I was drinking TOO much (quart a day) and it’ll eat the enamel off my teeth.

Well, Blanche, can you get used to diabetes?
Maybe Blanche should switch to “Nutra-Sweet”! Can you get artificial diabetes from that?
