Frazz by Jef Mallett for July 31, 2015
Transcript:
Caulfield: So, you have a song in your heart? Frazz: Always. Caulfield: What song? Frazz: Depends. Sometimes a ballad, sometimes speed metal. Sometimes it changes, like from warm-up to quarter-mile repeats. Caulfield: What'd he say what's "free bird"? Frazz: If my heart runs on "free bird", it's too old for intervals.

Caulfield knows of Dave Brubeckās āTake Fiveā one day, but not āFree Birdā on the next..?
This mightāve been a better straight line for one of the other random kids.

Itās like the ED ads say: āIf you know Freebird, ask your doctor if it is safe for you to run intervals.ā

āFree Birdā got old years ago. But leave it to Mr. Mallett to be pompous about it.

I know a synth song called āIntervalsā by the B**chinā Bajas.

Does anyone remember the billboards from the early 90ās reading āHONK If you hate Freebirdā It was a nationwide campaign, put up by one of the massive radio station conglomerates.

Hey! People who like āFree Birdā can still do interval training. The song is not actually my favorite. But songs of that era are often pretty damn amazing.

Took me a long time to realize just which song was Free Bird. Not playing attention to the lyrics.

Free or Angry ā you make the call.

Maybe not pompous. It sounds a bit like age-bashing to me: something that has become acceptable in some circles, though it is inaccurate. There are people of āthat ageā who can still run intervals, just as there are young people who canāt lift themselves up off the couch.

As for me, I like Freebird, and I donāt give a tinkerās damn what anyone thinks. I also love Brubeck, Bach, the Beatles, Cole Porter, Paul Simon etc., etc., etc. I donāt give my broken wind in a windstorm who else like what unless you want to have an intelligent conversation about musical evolution. You donāt like my choices? Perhaps you can just go live your judgmental life elsewhere! What a drag to hear people denigrating other peopleās musical choices. Chacun a son gout, my friends.
