I was in an “experimental” class starting in 1971 in junior high. Very little, if any, homework. During Reading/English the class was combined and the teachers let us work on Photography Club and the Newspaper, and also read what we wanted to. I did well during the junior high years.
In high school, same thing, but I took Graphic Arts at Vo-Tech and wasn’t very good about going to classes in school. Somehow I passed, one Psychology/Sociology teacher told me he wanted to fail me, but my work was too good when I was there. I guess being allowed to read whatever I wanted in our public library helped, I was out of the kid section when I was 10 and never told I couldn’t take any book out by the librarians.
That definitely does not reflect my kids’ middle school experiences. They got (and are currently getting) plenty of homework, and both good and bad grades were earned.

That’s how it is these days. Up and out, No one fails, and maybe they learn how to spell their name. Rest in Peace, America.
